Yabba dabba doo It’s Halloween!
We had so much fun this year with these Halloween costumes. The Flintsones has been on my mind since we had Keeley, Just like the little mermaid when Emilia was born and she dressed as Melody. Every year I always find myself sewing everyone’s costume mostly because I leave it too late to order something in time. Every other year has been fairly essay, but trying to make a dinosaur costume was challenging, even more so than Boo in monsters inc.
I started with Dino’s costume first, I purchased fleece fabric from fabricland at $10 a meter. Making the body and tail wasn’t too challenging. I basically made an oversized jumpsuit with a stuffed velcro tail. For the dots I used black vinyl glitter iron on and cut the shapes out with scissors. The hat was the hardest part and did have some challenges staying on. I tried to make it look like a baseball cap but stuffed on the top. Overall I think it turned out amazing even though she had to hold it in place most of the time.
Next I made Pebbles outfit, this was the easiest one out of them all. I used an old top that fit as a pattern and made it flair out more at the bottom. I only needed half a meter for this top and still had some fabric left over. For the black dots or triangles I use the same black vinyl glitter iron on as on Dino. I did purchase teal fabric for her shorts but I ended up already owning a diaper cover in the same colour.
Most of the costumes I took inspiration from the cartoon, but for Wilma I went with the 90’s live action dress. I grew up watching the 90’s live action movie a lot and always love how Wilma’s dress looked. I was able to thrift an old satin wedding dress at Value Village for $12.00. You just can’t beat that price! All I had to do was cut one strap off and cut the bottom to look like uneven panels. For Wilma’s iconic rock necklace I used model magic clay and shaped them into large rock shapes and strung them on brown yarn.
For Fred’s outfit I used a shirt dress as a pattern, but I didn’t take into consideration that I would not be the one wearing it and it ended up being a bit short. By this time I did not have time to remake or fix it, but it all worked out well in the end. I used the teal fabric for Fred’s tie and added more glitter iron on triangles to his shirt as well.
Every year I always surprise my self at what I am able to create in such a short time. Maybe next year I will order my costumes in August so I can just enjoy my fall! lol Weather you decide to diy your Flintstones costumes or buy (amazon has some great options as well! ) I hope every has a fun and safe Halloween!
